They have taken a significant step to fix this by adopting a draft law to restart the digitalisation of the energy transition and accelerate the smart meter rollout. The law, effective from Spring 2023, enables a large-scale rollout to commence immediately, becoming mandatory from 2025. The roadmap includes binding deadlines, aiming for a 20% rollout by the end of 2025, 50% by the end of 2028, and 95% by the end of 2030 for residential and small business consumers. Large users and generators have extended targets up to 2032.

This initiative, according to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), is crucial for establishing the necessary infrastructure for a largely climate-neutral energy system by 2030.
